One big thing that Sheboygan is known for, is our hard rolls. Luckily, a few bakeries in town are serving up the best for us along with a few other delicious treats. Each bakery serves their own special pastries and breads. The smell alone makes each shop irresistible! No matter where you decide to go just remember, life is always better with fresh baked goodies. So, lets "bake" the world a better place because where there's a whisk, there's a way!
Johnston's Bakery
Johnston’s Bakery, located on Superior Avenue, is a great place to order delicious donuts, hard rolls, cookies and coffee drinks! Just as I was about to walk into this classic looking bakery, a pastry aroma hit me like a brick wall. I couldn’t wait to get inside! The vintage interior gives the place a fresh and cozy feeling. I was amazed to see the amount of pastries put on display as I looked around. In addition to pastries, Johnston’s also carries refreshing drinks such as traditional espresso, cappuccino, latte, mocha, tea, and smoothies that pair nicely with your freshly baked goodies.
Grab a chair and stay for awhile! If you are looking for a nice place for a meeting, they offer a private room in the back. If you are on your way out don’t forget to grab Johnston’s Sheboygan-style hard rolls that are very light, tender and flavorful, with a thin, crispy crust.
Definitely a stop to get your money's worth while being taken care of by friendly service!
City Bakery
During the holidays you can see a line of people out the door for City Bakery's bread. They pride themselves on being home to Sheboygan’s exclusive hearth-baked hardrolls and breads, authentic Fleishbrok, Bavarian pretzels and fresh quality pastries. City Bakery as become so popular that it is encouraged to call ahead to reserve your rolls. But if you are willing to wait in line and cozy up close to other patient costumers, you won't be disappointed. Even individuals driving through Sheboygan make a special stop to get a taste of their hard rolls.
I, on the other hand, had my attention grabbed by a different section in the shop: dark chocolate turtles. Among all the goodies I couldn’t resist caramel dipped in dark chocolate, especially when the prices are so reasonable. Although it is a carry out shop only, that did not stop me from enjoying my turtles on my way to work. Next time I will have to see what the hype is about their hardrolls!
West-Side Bakery
This little bakery is located on Indiana Ave. They have many of the traditional pastries everyone knows and loves, and of course, they are delicious! The homemade cake = yum! Frosted cookies = yum! Doughnuts = yum! Hardrolls = yes, you guessed it, yum! I went in for one thing: doughnuts! There are so many "sweet" options to choose from, and I knew that no matter which ones I picked, I would be more than satisfied.
Be sure to bring cash because they do not accept debit or credit cards. However, they do pride themselves on making high-quality products and bringing joy and pleasure to the community.
Canseco's Mexican Bakery
Although this little red building is tucked away on a side street, they do not hide their flavors in their traditional Mexican foods. If you are not there to try their specialty Bolillos with cheese and jalapenos or Bolovanes with beef, chicken, and ham, which have great flavor and perfect texture, do yourself a favor and pick one up.
It is most definitely a great place for delicious Mexican bread, tamales, and pastries! They "offer an extended stock of delicious warm Sweet Bread with a Mexican flavor and exquisite Three Milk Cake with natural fruit." If you can't make it to the shop, you might see their food truck in Vollrath Park on Monday nights during the summer or at the Farmer's Market. On this day, you can enjoy a refreshing smoothie or ice cream with churros!
If you ask others, they'll say their food is tasty and simply divine!
Big Apple Bagels
This restaurant can be found in other cities, but we are oh so lucky to have one! When you walk in, it feels more like a café than a chain. They offer a broad range of options to keep customers returning for breakfast sandwiches, deli sandwiches, muffins, coffee, of course BAGELS, and I am pretty sure I saw gelato!
Everything down to the cream cheese you spread on your bagels is made fresh and delicious! Unfortunately, I wasn’t in the mood for bagels, since I had a big breakfast, so I ordered a muffin (or two). Big Apple Bagels has deals for their baked goods throughout the entire week. For example, on Tuesdays, you can get a dozen bagels for under 8 bucks! The workers help give the place a casual and friendly atmosphere by filling you in on deals so you to get more for your money.
