Designated in 2021, the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary safeguards our maritime heritage in Lake Michigan. Co-managed by NOAA and the state of Wisconsin, the sanctuary builds on the state's 30-year legacy of managing these historic sites, offering new opportunities for research, resource protection, and education. Collaborating with local communities, the sanctuary serves as a national platform for promoting recreation and heritage tourism.
The sanctuary encompasses 36 historic shipwreck sites, featuring vessels that were pivotal in the nation's development between the 1830s and 1930s. Twenty-seven of these are listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and research indicates that up to 60 more shipwrecks may yet be discovered.
