The
John Michael
Kohler Arts Center is nationally recognized for its collection
of folk art, vernacular art, and works by self-taught artists, as
well as its support of emerging contemporary artists. The Arts
Center's 100,000-square-foot facility features 10 galleries, a
theatre, shop, and cafe, as well as studio classrooms and meeting
spaces. Each of the six public washrooms was created by a
different artist in the Arts Centers' joint residency program with
the Kohler Co., known as Arts/Industry. These unique washrooms
have been named as among the best in the world by Conde Naste, the
Travel Channel, and others.
The Arts Center hosts 30
exhibitions annually with works in every conceivable medium,
and it is also home to five performing arts series, which include
theatre, dance, live music, and film. Admission is free, although
donations are welcome and appreciated. Free and low cost
artmaking activities are available to families in the ARTery,
an interactive learning gallery. The Arts Center is open seven
days per week, but it is closed most major holidays, except for
Independence Day.

Stefanie Weill Center for the Performing Arts
On October 7, 1996, the Sheboygan Community Theatre Foundation, a
not-for-profit corporation, was established and became the single
significant driving force in the $10 million dollar preservation and
restoration of the Sheboygan Theater. Designed in the Spanish
Colonial Revival architectural style, it is an especially fine and
intact example of the ‘atmospheric” type movie theater developed in
the 1920’s. The property was placed on the National Register of
Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior and
the State of Wisconsin Register of Historic Places by the State
Historical Society of Wisconsin on December 22, 1999. Performances
include the Sheboygan Symphony concerts and live guest appearances
by well-known artists |
